How Media Manager works

Our research team pro-actively contacts media owners to input and update the Media Manager database (see The database for a full list of data fields). We sell the contents of the database in two formats: a fully Windows based computer program called Media Manager Desktop, plus a traditional printed directory called Media Manager Directory. Because the Media Manager team edits all information into a standardised format users do not have to hunt around checking data, comparing the incomparable. Overseeing all operations is Mike Leahy, previously a heavyweight media director and author of the first local textbook on media. This is users’ assurance that there is someone who understands their needs and problems.

How much does it cost media owners

All data in both products is carried absolutely free-of-charge for all media owners. All our revenue is sourced from selling subscriptions.

Why subscribers buy Media Manager

Subscribers pay for the Desktop and Directory because the products are comprehensive and contain valuable data edited into the format that suites their needs. Media Manager Desktop is installed on clients’ local desktop and notebook computers or networks. This means that all information is immediately available to those who need it - media-decision makers - when they need it. The trials and tribulations of getting information from hard to reach reps, or retrieving tons of data from slow and expensive internet access is not a factor. The information is really up-to-date - twice a month our clients download a file via the internet that contains all the new data.

Information plus

Along with the access to the data is a whole lot of tools. This enable users to create documents and memos for internal and presentation to clients, and to re-calculate the figures the way they must. It saves them time and energy. And allows them to spend more time on doing the real work of planning and buying. This brings the typical user comment “...with Media Manager I’m in the know.”

Media Manager Desktop is bought by virtually all important main-stream advertising agencies and media independents. Plus a large number of public relations consultants and direct clients. What you can do to help

We at the Media Manager Research team believe that it is our duty to get the information, even if you do not co-operate. We owe this to our subscribers. Nevertheless it will help us, and therefore our subscribers and yourself if you join us in a partnership to update the data.

When we receive information we edit it into our standard format so that your information is comparable with everything else in Media Manager. This is why we cannot allow you to input directly. How you get us the information will depend on the complexity or otherwise of what you are sending us and your timing, although a written format is preferable. The following are guidelines:

Telephone the Research Team

This is the simplest and quickest way, but is suitable mostly for changes to a few personnel names, contact numbers, address and such like. Call Martie or Jean on 011-465-3704

Fax the Research Team

If we have queries (like reworking rates, VAT inclusive/exclusive, agency commission etc) we follow-up with a ‘phone call. Send even hand written updates to 011-465-3731

E-mail

Perhaps the best and easiest way to send rate cards. We accept attachments in text, Microsoft Word document (1997 version or later), Excel (1997 or later), Lotus 123 (wk4 or later) or Adobe Acrobat PDF format (version 4 or later). Post

If the updates are urgent then do not use the post. Rather e-mail or fax. Nevertheless there are many occasions when the good old SA Post Office comes into its own - for instance voucher copies (see the next point). And we do seem to receive our mail timeously. Voucher copies
